Webinar Series - 2024

We're excited to partner with the Aged Care Industry Association to present a series of seminars from March through to October 2024 plus we'll have more seminars announced soon.

Color Design for Aged Care and Dementia Care is a 2-hour online seminar and dates for 2024 are as follows:

About the seminar:

Effective color design in healthcare, aged care and dementia care has moved beyond aesthetics. In the past, color design strategies focused on creating environments that were engaging, harmonious and practical, either in relation to people living in or visiting healthcare environments but more often in relation to key stakeholders or decision-makers. While color design strategies continue to focus on encouraging engagement, this is now just a starting point.

In healthcare, aged care and dementia care, evidence-based color design strategies help to achieve key aims: (1) Address the variable vision capacity and visual challenges experienced by the population in general and in particular older people and people living with dementia. (2) Enhance environmental visual literacy and help improve orientation, wayfinding, and the safe operation of daily activities. (3) Ensure that color design strategies are underpinned by the imperatives of inclusivity, diversity and user centred involvement in decision-making and respect for all people using healthcare environments and especially older people and people living with dementia. This evidence-based seminar is presented by Dr Zena O'Connor.

#colordesign #colorschemes #agedcare #onlineseminar #agedcareindustry

A New Take on Hering's Theories

This simple color model illustration relates to Ewald Hering’s opponent color theory. However, a newly published research paper reviews the psychological and physiological evidence for Hering’s Opponent Colors Theory and concludes the theory is wrong.

According to Conway, Malik-Moraleda, & Gibson, behavioral work shows that the theory’s three appearance mechanisms (red-versus-green, blue-versus-yellow, and black-versus-white) are not necessary to describe color. Physiological work shows that neural color-encoding mechanisms are not characterized by tuning to the opponent colors of the theory. Contrary to Opponent-Colors Theory, the color encoding mechanisms of the brain are not evident in perception. A new Utility-Based Coding framework is described in the paper, by which color depends on many interacting brain areas. Encoding mechanisms efficiently capture and transmit to the cortex as much chromatic information as possible given selective pressures for both color and high acuity vision, while appearance reflects adaptable neural operations that optimally support behavior under changing contexts and objectives.

The authors - Bevil Conway, Saima Malik-Moraleda and Edward Gibson - are from the Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research, National Eye Institute and National Institute of Mental Health, Bethesda, MD; Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, M.I.T., Cambridge, MA; and the Program in Speech and Hearing Bioscience and Technology, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, respectively.

Conway, B. Color saturation and tonal value tend to have a greater impact than hue.

This online seminar explores a range of contemporary residential colour strategies and provides multiple strategies that are evidence-based and aimed at achieving particular outcomes for clients. This approach to residential colour schemes removes the sometimes-problematic subjective approach to colour scheme development and instead offers an outcome-focused approach to residential colour strategies.

Learning Outcomes

Understand the impact of variations of hue and tonal value in residential interiors.

Recognize evidence-based colour schemes and how these can be used in residential contexts (Hushed Tonalities, Shadow Palettes, Polychromy, Biophilia).

Recognize variations in ambience and mood arising from different combinations of color tonal values (Chords and keys).

Understand the ‘New Neutrals’ colour strategy and the effective use of these in residential contexts.

Recognize evidence-based colour effects and how these can be applied in residential interiors (Restorff/Isolation effect and Simultaneous Contrast).

Award-winning Community Project

Today is the 6th anniversary of our award-winning community project, which was timed to coincide with Vivid Sydney 2017. The project featured saturated colors in a simple pattern that mimicked the brightly-colored yacht sails on Sydney Harbour.

Research indicates that color can play a key role in transforming and revitalizing the urban environment, and encourages interaction and engagement.

The project won two awards – Resene Landscape Maestro Award (2017) and the Master Painters Association Community Award (2017). See Resene News link.

Designed by Zena O’Connor, the project was made possible by the generous support of key partners: North Sydney Council (Martin Ellis and David Manson), the Master Painters Association NSW and Sydney Harbour Trust (Dr Susan Culverston). The picnic huts were painted by Tom Wood (Summit Coatings), Jayden Olival (apprentice from Decorative Solutions) and Ben Doganer (apprentice from MPA) with the kind help of Zef Olival.

The colour supergraphics design was based on maritime signals (‘Oscar’) as Sydney Harbour is still a working harbour and sailing is a popular local pastime. Two colour schemes were created, one for each hut and the colours were inspired by red, orange and pink yacht spinnakers, purple Jacaranda blossoms, blue water and sky, green foliage and yellow sunshine.

The ‘Grand Opening’ was held on 28 May 2017 and attracted a happy crowd. Feedback was very positive:

“The coloured huts are wonderful and the paint job seems to encourage people to look after them better”, Fazeley Read, High Street, North Sydney.

“I can see the picnic huts from my home across Neutral Bay and I love their bright, cheerful colours”, Jilly Gibson, Mayor of North Sydney.

© Zena O'Connor - https://zenaoconnor.com/

Color Design Resources - Our mission is to share evidence-based color design information and resources, and make a positive difference by supporting color activations, color-related events, workshops and color awards.

Getting it White

Thousands of white paint colors exist and this huge array of whites can complicate color scheme specification. However, three key issues are important to consider and these can help simplify white paint color specification.

Firstly, what is the aim of the project in terms of style and ambience? Second, once the style and ambience is determined, select a white paint color that has a hue/undertone suitable for the project. Finally, be aware of the impact of simultaneous contrast as this can influence the appearance of paint color.

Style and ambience

Consider the style outcomes of the project and select a preferred style as this can narrow down white paint color selection. Styles may include:

Edgy, ultra modern and non-traditional - stark, vivid whites; whites with a cool undertone

Modern, contemporary, more classical than cutting edge - whites with a neutral/grey undertone

Traditional, conventional and classical - whites with a subtle warm undertone

Historical, vintage and old-time quaint - whites with a subtle yellow undertone

Each of these styles tend to convey a certain ambience which can be reinforced by paint color specification plus furniture and fittings selection. For each of these styles, the presence or absence of textures and furnishing selections can reinforce, enhance and complement white paint colors.

Hue/undertone

White paint colors vary due to hue/undertone and these throw or reflect varying tints and shades of white. White paint colors vary primarily for two reasons.

Each individual white paint color may have a small proportion - albeit a very tiny proportion - of a hue mixed with the white paint color.

Due to the way paint is manufactured and the base paint used, white paints almost inevitably have an undertone, and this undertone may reflect a hint of yellow, blue, pink, brown or grey. As a result, white paint colors vary considerably.

As a result, various white paint colors exhibit slightly different apparent white impressions; however, there are a couple of ways to identify the hue/undertones that may occur in individual white paint colors.

Some paint companies like Resene Paints provide hex codes for all their paint colors and this can be used to identify and hue/undertone evident in the paint color. In addition, Resene Paint colors are identified using a code which starts with a letter. This letter indicates the base color of the paint: Y for yellow, BR for brown, G for green and N is for neutral (which means black, or rather grey once white is added).

A second way to identify hue/undertone in white paint colors is to actually paint a large surface area - preferably 3x3 feet or 1 metre square. From Dresser to Bauhaus

There's an interesting link between one of the first British industrial designers Christopher Dresser and Walter Gropius' Bauhaus Manifesto. Dresser (1834-1904) published Principles of Decorative Design (1870) and Walter Gropius (1883-1969) published the Bauhaus Manifesto in 1919, only fifteen years after Dresser's death. Both texts focus on unity of the arts and an approach to design characterized by utility and purpose of design, design innovation, and individual creativity freed from the shackles of prescriptive that occured in tandem with the design patterns books. Curiously, the link can also be seen in two illustrations from both publications.

–

Design pattern books were highly influential for those involved in applied design and design for the built environment from the mid-eighteenth through the nineteenth century and early twentieth century.

During this period, design pattern books proliferated providing inspiration for some, while others simply copied designs found within these books. Early examples included Langley’s The City and Country Builder's and Workman's Treasury of Designs (1741) and Cruden’s Convenient and Ornamental Architecture (1797). Pattern books, featuring multiple designs illustrated in black and white, were widely used during this period.

Subsequent design pattern books featured color and key examples include Hulme’s Principles of Ornamental Art (1875) plus The Grammar of Ornament (1856) by British architect Owen Jones, who aimed to develop a new visual language for color and design. Jones’ design involvement with the Great Exhibition saw him become one of the most influential designers in Britain. He created illustrations for The Grammar of Ornament using pen, ink, and gouache which were reproduced as lithographs for the text. During the nineteenth century, traditional color theory developed and spread considerably due to the influence of Owen Jones.

Jones’ protégé Christopher Dresser was one of the first independent industrial designers. He published The Art of Decorative Design (1862) and Principles of Decorative Design (1873). In these texts, he focused on design patterns and also discussed traditional color theory, providing multiple suggestions for color in design. During this era, design pattern books also proliferated across Europe including Polychromatic Ornament (1877) by Auguste Racinet (French cultural historian, painter) and Handbook of Ornament (1892) by Franz Sales Meyer, Professor at the School of Applied Art in Karlsruhe. Design patterns books also emerged in design education such as Day’s Pattern Design: A Book for Students (1915), and these often featured a prescriptive approach to color and design.

Of the design pattern books, perhaps the most influential was Dresser's Principles of Decorative Design. In this book, he heralded a new approach to design and color application that was less prescriptive and more exploratory. This approach was also evident in key texts of the twentieth century including those of Josef Albers and Johannes Itten, as well as the curriculum and pedagogy of the Bauhaus. This exploratory approach to design and color better suited the needs of designers and architects during the early twentieth century, who required more than prescriptive, one-size-fits-all design and color options for their wide range of differing design projects. It also enabled architects and designers to explore brave new directions in design and color, and forge new paths forward that were characterized by innovation and individual creativity.

During the mid-nineteenth century and especially the early twentieth century (before the advent of computer-assisted design), design ideation and conceptualization by architects and designers entailed creating visual imagery by hand. To this end, design maquettes and renderings featured pencil, pen, ink, and watercolor or bodycolor paint, the latter substituted eventually by gouache. These methods were used to actualize intended designs for building, manufacturing, or printing.

In this context, gouache provided a highly useful medium due to its capacity to dry quickly, provide opaque color coverage plus large flat areas of color with hard borders between colors to enable clarity of design definition, plus it had the capacity to provide an immeasurable range of color nuances from a limited palette. Architects and designers used gouache to quickly create full-color renderings and explore different design and color options. In using this methodology, they were able to evaluate different design options and determine whether they were fit-for-purpose and effective in terms of the intended aims of each project.

Exploring the link between Christopher Dresser and the Bauhaus needs a quick recap of the origins of this highly influential design school. The history of the Bauhaus dates back to the Deutscher Werkbund, which was an association of artists, designers, architects and industrialists founded in 1907 in Munich. Among the twleve that established the Werkbund were Peter Behrens, Henry van de Velde, and Josef Hoffmann.6

Established to create a partnership to promote competitiveness in German design and manufacturing, a key member was the highly influential architect and designer Peter Behrens who employed Mies Van Der Rohe, Le Corbusier, and Walter Gropius in his design consultancy. Gropius went on to found the Bauhaus in 1919 in Weimar, Germany. The Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1925 and Berlin in 1932; and Van Der Rohe was director of the Bauhaus from 1930 until the school was closed by the Nazis in 1933.

Gropius explained his ideas behind the Bauhaus in the founding Manisfesto. In this text, Gropius did not demand a new style or form of art but a fundamental reform of the entirety of artistic work. Gropuis' aim was to unify all forms of art and design, including painting, craftwork, through to industrial and architectural design.

The cover of the Bauhaus Manifesto features an image with strong patterns of similarity to Dresser's sketch, both visually and philosophically. The Bauhaus Manifesto served as a promotional tool during the establishment of the Bauhaus in 1919 amd its cover featured a woodcut (1919) by Lyonel Feininger. In this woodcut, Feininger aimed to embody the hopes of the Bauhaus. The artwork features angular, diagonal lines with a cathedral-type building projecting purposefully from the centre of the woodcut. The image is dynamic and conveys a sense of the energy and optimism that characterized the founding of the Bauhaus. In addition, the woodcut technology and the graphic imagery of the artwork also provides a visual link to an almost medieval aesthetic while also hinting at the mass production techniques that became prevalent in the twentieth century and which underpinned design at the Bauhaus.

Gropius was keen to unify the arts and bring them together in a school that encouraged architects, painters and designers to learn “a new way of seeing and understanding the composite of the building, both as a totality and in terms of its parts. Their work will then re-imbue itself with the spirit of architecture, which it lost in salon art” (Gropius, Bauhaus Manifesto, 1919). The cathedral served as a “symbol of a new belief to come" ( Gropius, 1919, Bauhaus Manifesto). This belief became paramount for Gropius in tandem with his desire to unify the arts and engender positive change in the future.

Dresser's sketch, The Principles of Decorative Design (1870) and Feininger's woodcut, Bauhaus Manifesto (1919).

The cover of the Bauhaus Manifesto features an image with strong patterns of similarity to Dresser's sketch; similarities that are both visual and symbolic.

In reference to his sketch (Figure 12, The Principles of Decorative Design, 1870), Dresser notes, “I have given in this chapter an original sketch (Fig. 12), in which I have sought to embody chiefly the one idea of power, energy, force, or vigour; and in order to this, I have employed such lines as we see in the bursting buds of spring, when the energy of growth is at its maximum, and especially such as to be seen in the spring growth of a luxuriant tropical vegetation; I have also availed myself of those forms to be seen in certain bones of birds which are associated with the organs of flight, and which give us an impression of great strength, as well as those observable in the powerful propelling fins of certain species of fish” (Dresser, 1870, p17).

For Dresser, the vigour, energy, power and force found in nature are paramount. He sees nature as a key source of inspiration for design (as opposed to design pattern books) and wanted to embody the key traits of nature across all aspects of the production and application of design. However, he also sets his sights most definitely on utility of design and in fact, this is the first of the principles of design that he discusses in The Principles of Decorative Design. While Dresser echoes Keats' dictum, “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”, he notes the importance of ‘economy of materials’, ‘truth, beauty and power’, ‘fitness of purpose’, and ‘utility’, noting “the first aim of the designer of any article must be to render the object which he produces useful” (Dresser, 1870, p17). Dresser also intermingles design in respect to ornament and architecture, and like Gropius, he aimed to unify the the arts, providing principles that had relevance across applied design and architectural design.

It is interesting to note that Dresser's sketch is the only expressive illustration in The Principles of Decorative Design; all other illustrations are of a practical nature and intended as inspiration for design. It is also interesting to note that Feininger's rough woodcut illustration did not reflect the clean lines and smooth shapes that were evident across the design ouput of the Bauhaus.

REFERENCES

Asagari, A. & Fathi, R. In the past, colour design strategies focused on creating environments that were engaging, harmonious and practical, either in relation to people living in or visiting healthcare environments but more often in relation to key stakeholders or decision-makers.

While colour design strategies continue to focus on encouraging engagement, this is now just a starting point. In healthcare, aged care and dementia care, evidence-based colour design strategies help to achieve key aims: (1) Address the variable vision capacity and visual challenges experienced by the population in general and in particular older people and people living with dementia. (2) Enhance environmental visual literacy and help improve orientation, wayfinding, and the safe operation of daily activities. (3) Ensure that colour design strategies are underpinned by the imperatives of inclusivity, diversity and user-centred involvement in decision-making and respect for all people using healthcare environments and especially older people and people living with dementia.

The content of this seminar is linked to the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) National Standard of Competency for Architects and addresses the unit of competency of ‘Design’ and the elements of ‘Pre-Design’ and ‘Conceptual Design’.

This evidence-based workshop is developed and delivered by Dr Zena O'Connor, The Colour Collective and Design Research Associates in conjunction with the Aged Care Industry Association - https://acia.asn.au/course-list/colour-design-for-aged-care-and-dementia-care/

Zena O'Connor website - https://zenaoconnor.com/

In an initiative aimed at bolstering community connection and positivity during the extended Sydney Covid-19 lockdown in July-August 2021, the Colour Collective Sydney hosted a social media-based project. The colour community in Sydney was encouraged to post images on Instagram using the hashtag #ColourMeHappySydney.

The response saw the sharing online of multiple colourful images and lots of cross-community comment and connectivity. We were happy to provide another opportunity to bolster our community during the difficult extended Covid lockdown.

The project has garnered an abundance of positive responses not just from individuals but also from the corporate sector with one organisation posting, “One of our favourite sites is @the.colour.collective. Not only are their posts bright and colourful but they are always interesting, providing fun, colour-based facts. We’re jumping on board their latest mission by posting our version of a colourful, lovely quirky image with the hashtag #ColourMeHappySydney”.

Specified vs. Perceived Colour CPD Webinar

This CPD webinar provides evidence-based information for architects and designers, and focuses on managing the factors that impact specified colour in the built environment. Commissioned and hosted by Resene, New Zealand, and presented by Dr Zena O'Connor, you can view this webinar via this link.

Colour scheme specification for both interior spaces and exterior building façades can sometimes be problematic. Not simply in terms of aesthetics or functionality, but due to the range of factors that can directly impact or influence perception of specified colour, creating a situation where perceived colour differs from specified colour. Aside from the complexity of both colour and human perception of colour, there are a number of factors that impact perception of colour in respect to interior spaces and exterior façades.

These factors, which impact colour scheme development and need to be considered during the development process, include the influence of contextual colour, simultaneous contrast effect, as well as variations in ambient lighting. This discussion will refer to colour specification strategies that can be employed to manage and/or mitigate the factors that impact specified colour and, to a certain extent, also address client-related issues. These strategies will be examined with reference to case studies that focus on recent projects.

Colour knowledge survey

Lingua Colour is developing a new colour system for creative professionals and educators, and to achieve this, Craig Kirkwood, PhD researcher at Cardiff Metropolitan University, is conducting a survey to evaluate the level of understanding about colour among the general community, professionals and academics.

This is exactly the type of research that can contribute findings relevant to developing new colour education curriculum or modifying existing curriculum. A survey like this is a great first step to undertake and one that the AIC Colour Literacy project might consider given that one of their goals is to ‘Identify and address the most basic misconceptions and misinformation about colour'.

If you're interested in participating in the survey or keen to find out more, head over to the Lingua Colour website https://linguacolour.com/

Traditional colour theory

If you're confused about 'traditional colour theory', there's a newly published paper that clearly describes this branch of colour theory. Published in the leading journal on colour (Color Research & Application) the paper avoids confusing and conflated ideas about colour, making this branch of colour theory and application easy to understand.

Written by Dr Zena O'Connor (whose PhD focused on responses to colour in the built environment), this peer-reviewed paper can be accessed online.

Abstract - Traditional colour theory: A review (Color Research & Application, 2021)

A plethora of colour theories exist in the literature across diverse fields of inquiry including physics, phenomenology, psychology, linguistics, vision science, art, and design. In addition, colour theories abound in mainstream media and the internet. One particular branch of these diverse colour theories is referred to as ‘traditional colour theory’ and this branch is distinguished from other branches of colour theory by its ontological focus, epistemological traditions and characteristics, and its applications in art, applied design and design of the built environment. This branch of theory, which dates back some centuries and has a record of contribution, has also received criticism primarily due to an inadequate correspondence with the science of colour and the simplistic nature of conceptual models and constructs associated with this branch of colour theory.

This discussion reviews the aims and intentions of traditional colour theory gleaned from key colour theorists. Reference is made to the ontological focus and epistemological traditions and methods evident in this branch of colour theory plus its validity primarily in respect to applied design and design of the built environment. A definition of traditional colour theory is offered and criticism of this branch of colour theory is addressed in conjunction with elucidation of its legacy.

Colour Talk at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery

Contemporary Colour Strategies in Design & Architecture: The legacy of Marion Hall Best.

Hear from Dr Zena O’Connor as she discusses contemporary ideas and theories on colour in conjunction with the Marion Hall Best exhibition - 26 February 2020.

Marion Hall Best was at the forefront of design in Australia for forty years (from mid-1930s to 1974). Her interiors featured vibrant colours, bold contrasts and distinctive patterns, and she reinforced her intuitive approach to colour and design approach through her design stores in Rowe Street and Woollahra.

While high chroma hues and bold, contrasting colours were a reflection of the broader 1960s/1970s culture, a number of colour strategies from this period have enjoyed resurgence in design and the built environment, albeit with a contemporary twist.

High chroma colours and colour contrasts have become common in both interior and exterior colour design. In addition, strong tonal value contrasts underpin the ‘New Neutrals’ approach to colour design in the built environment. This presentation explores these key colour strategies in contemporary design and architecture, and the impact these have in respect to activating spaces and encouraging engagement. The presentation also includes a recap of key colour attributes and concepts relevant to design and architecture.

The Colour Collective Sydney celebrated International Day at a fabulous evening event at Caroma on Collins, Alexandria, Sydney.

Speakers on the night included Nuha Saad, a Sydney-based installation artist and sculptor. Nuha's colourful public art installations feature in City of Sydney sites, Meriton developments, Marrickville High School and Transport NSW sites across Sydney.
The Colour Collective was a proud supporter of this award-winning colour intervention in Kesterton Park, North Sydney. Initiated by one of our founders, Zena O'Connor, project partners included North Sydney Council, Resene Paints and the Master Painters Association. The project, which won the Maestro Colour Award at the Resene Colour Awards, 2017, proved popular with the local community. The picnic huts, which had become run down and were in need of a make-over, reflected the colours of the playground in the park and also the colours and design elements that featured in the yacht spinnakers that sailed past this park on the edge of Sydney Harbour.
