Start anytime! This Colour Fundamentals course is an online 12-week course that gives you foundational knowledge about colour.

This Colour Fundamentals course allows participants to learn online at their own pace. Each session is a stand-alone component that blends colour theory with fun, practical exercises.

Starting from the day you place your booking, you'll be emailed each component on a weekly basis (from Week 1 through to Week 12). Each component includes detailed worksheets, practical exercise templates and a PowerPoint, and represents 3 hours of interactive learning.

At the conclusion of the course, you'll gain foundational knowledge about colour theory and application, and have the confidence to work with colour from an informed perspective.

Learning outcomes: 1) A resource that illustrates foundational colour information and key colour strategies for future use and application; 2) Identify and experiment with Colour Wheels, Key Colour Categories and Attributes including Hue, Tonal Value, Saturation, and Primary Colours; 3) Identify and experiment with colour nuances including Tints, Shades, Secondary Colour and Tertiary Colour; 4) Identify and experiment with colour strategies common in design, art and the built environment including Analogous Colour, Seven Types of Colour Contrast, Chords & Keys, Monotone and Monochromatic Colour. Course cost - $495 for the full 12-week course payable through Eventbrite.

Duration – 12 weeks, 36 hours in total

Colour Kit – each participant receives worksheets and templates for the practical exercises of each component.

Materials required – You will need to buy an A4 visual diary and scissors, cutting knife, glue and double-sided tape. Plus, interior design magazines and commercial paint chips (available from Dulux, Resene Paints and Bunnings).

Prerequisites – No prior knowledge or experience is necessary.

This course suits anyone with an interest in colour and colour application. The course content is relevant to interior designers, graphic and visual communication designers, fashion designers, theatre and makeup designers, and digital designers.

6 Formal CPD points for architects and designers. The content of this workshop is linked to the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) National Standard of Competency for Architects (2015 edition) and addresses the unit of competency of ‘Design’ and the specific elements of ‘Pre-Design’ and ‘Conceptual Design’. Performance criteria: 2.6 Preparation and analysis of project development options in response to project brief. 3.1 Design response integrates the objectives of brief, user intent and built purpose.

Course developer and presenter – Dr Zena O’Connor. A designer by training, Zena is an evidence-based research consultant. Her consultancy work colour insight and validation, colour strategies to improve environmental visual literacy in design and the built environment. Zena has worked on numerous projects including branding and logo design, data visualisation, colour trend analysis, aged care design, product and packaging design, and urban supergraphics. An individual member of the AIC (International Colour Association), ISCC (Inter-Society Color Council); EDRA (Environmental Design Research Association), and DIA (Design Institute of Australia), Zena has published widely in peer-reviewed academic and trade journals, and is a frequent presenter at local and international conferences. Zena creates educational content and delivers lectures, seminars and CPD workshops for architects and designers. In 2006, Zena founded Design Research Associates and in 2017, she founded the Colour Collective Sydney, an organisation of design and creative professionals dedicated to initiating and supporting colour activations in the built environment and urban domain.
